About 2.5 km north of Fichti, on the road to Corinth, is a sign pointing to a "Blockhouse". This is a bit misleading because if you follow the dirt track you arrive at a quite well-preserved ancient building in nice polygonal masonry. Sometimes thought to be Mycenaean, which also was my first impression, it is now attributed to the fourth century BC. This late date is supported by archaeological finds, the character of the masonry and the choice of conglomerate as building material. Also the purpose of the building is controversial. Sometimes thought to be a guard post for Mycenae of about 1300 BC it is rather an agricultural center or a customs station of the Late Classical / Hellenistic period. |
